Career Day 1
Career Day is a day where everyone (or mostly everyone) shadows someone at a job or company that they are interested in. For this career day, I shadowed a family friend, Susan Brent. She owns her own business. She rents from an antique mall, owning a little space of her own. She buys items from garage sales and works on them and then sells them there in her space. Below are her answers to my interview questions:
Q: Describe a typical workday.
A: Because the space is open everyday, I work mostly on weekends. I buy items from garage and estate sales, visit the unit and rearrange items, take inventory, and then go home to work on ongoing projects.
Q: General work policies for this job?
A: Self employed, make your own rules. The unit is open from 10am-5pm for seven days a week.
Q: Purpose of organization?
A: Profit.
Q: What is the dress code at the worksite?
A: Casual dress.
Q: Education needed to be successful at your worksite?
A: Working knowledge of crafting and business and the ability to research resale values.
Q: How did you get into the field you are working in?
A: Passion for creativity and art, and made my hobby into a business.
Q: Are there any skills that are necessary for your position?
A: Painting, crafting, sewing, and salesmanship skills.
Q: How did you acquire these skills?
A: Self-taught.
Q: What advice do you have about your business?
A: Set deadlines and keep them, don't let family distract, you have to be self-disciplines, and have organization.
At this shadowing, I helped move furniture and antiques around in the unit. We discussed what kinds of things she sells in her space. She sells a bit of china and cabinets, but she is working on selling a line of baby and kid clothes and toys. I got to look at her workspace at home and what kinds of things she was working on in there before heading home. It took a little less time than a traditional job, but she told me that there wasn't much to be done that day.
