Over the course of my internship, I have learned the importance of self-advocacy. My mentor is responsible for running an entire organization and her work never ends. Because of this, she often leaves me to do my own work while she works on other things. I had to learn that if I need something from her and/or help on an assignment, I need to tell her outright what I needed so it could happen. I notice the other administration employees have a lot of self-advocacy because they have work to do that is necessary for her to help with sometimes. I hope that I learn how to do this, I am often worried that I will be too rude or pushy. I don't want to ruin my first experience of a workplace.
In the beginning of internship, I did bring a notebook but there weren't very many pages left and I wasn't taking notes. I noticed quickly that I couldn't do that anymore. My mentor was very nice and gave me a composition book that she had lying around for my internship journal. I learned to record everything that I needed to do or what was going on. I try to be as professional as possible whenever I am working at this organization. When I first started, I often ran out of things to do after half of the day went by, but now I realize how much work I have and my mentor has been so considerate, telling me that I will go insane if I just sit at her computer all day and that I need to bring in my cello and practice. I now look forward to going to work and experiencing a nice full day of work and music with nothing too stressful going on.
