Adolescent and Teen Health
Quick Description: Over the course of this project, we studied the recent trend of teen inactivity. We learned how exercise and eating the right foods is vital to keeping up your health throughout your entire life. We studied this on a biological level as well as how to write a literary review in order to convince the school board to implement some kind of physical activity into the lives of the students.
If you would like to read through, you can see a document to the right that has all of the terms that we wrote into our A-Z teen health book. You can read the literary review that my team and I wrote to argue that physical activity is important in school. In addition to writing a literary review, we also interviewed parents, students, teachers, and doctors and used those findings within the review and in our exhibition of our work. We presented our work to the community in our school-wide exhibition. For my area in the exhibition, I presented our DNA labs as well as some of the biology behind genetic health. You can look below at the art piece that I made using paint on canvas and the vials of DNA from out students who participated in the DNA lab. |

Reflection:
Over the course of this project, I helped write the methodology section in the literary review, created two art pieces to represent our DNA labs, co-conducted an interview with a school administrator, wrote a section in our A-Z health book (a letter R term), and led a small group during exhibition that was in charge of explaining the importance of genetics in health. It was very interesting to write a paper as a team because everyone wrote one section, at least, which was hard to put together in the end. Everyone has a different writing style, and it was hard trying to make the paper flow and not have anything that was previously written or anything that goes within a different section. I was proud of this paper because it has so much evidence, and it is the first time our entire team has successfully come together to create a product. I am disappointed that not a lot of people saw it, I know that the board of our schools saw it, but it seems like it had no affect. Another product the entire team participated in was the A-Z book we created about health. This book was definitely not a disappointment. Many students in our team and exhibition attenders bought this book to keep and learn from. I was also proud of how much I learned about genetics over the course of the project. I only had a little bit of time since it wasn't what I had been studying throughout the entire project, but rather the last week or two for exhibition set up. Above, you can read the script that I wrote for the member of the genetics team I led for exhibition night. I learned a lot about genetics and DNA, which was helpful for my other product: my art pieces you can see above. On either side of my painted double-helix strand, there are lists of students in the team, and the order of those correspond to the whose DNA is attached in order of top to bottom.
This project was engaging because the topic is so important and relevant to me. I got to learn why being healthy as a teenager is vitally important to one's health. I got to apply myself, because we started tracking all of our exercise and healthy food choices. I wasn't particularly proud of my exercise and eating habits before and during this project, but I was happy to notice a change after the project was over. I was proud of my knowledge that I learned over this project. I got to learn all about genes and how they affect your health and vice versa. I felt that this project was very important because now I know that we have the ability to change our lives and other students lives through our work. I don't know what happened after students presented to the school board about the importance of physical activity in school, but I hope that our information made a difference, even if it was very slight.
