Day 2: Casa de Amparo
On Tuesday, our Service Session group went to Casa de Amparo, located in San Marcos. This non-profit helps children and minors that have been abused and/or neglected. Many are foster kids and this organization provides residential homes, apartments, and services for them. They also provide a neutral meting place for families trying to reunite and help for pregnant and parenting teenagers. All of the work that I did was cleaning. We had a short tour around the place and then started working in one of the rooms where families are allowed to meet (with supervision). We spent the whole time vacuuming, sweeping, wiping surfaces, cleaning windows, and cleaning toys and books.
After spending the whole time cleaning, I felt that I had left the place better. I don't know how much it helped to spend the day cleaning, but since the rooms were really dirty, I felt that I helped out the organization at least a little. It was tiring work because I was trying very hard to make a difference. I was happy to help an organization that gives to minors because I am also one.
